Correlation: numerical measure of the strength of the relation between two things . Variable: the things , events, scores or anything that can be recorded or tallied. Positive variable: high values of one variable associated with high values of another, same as low values of a variable being associated with the low of another. Negative variable: high values of one variable associate with low values of another. Dependent variable: the variable that the experimenter predicts will be affected by manipulations of the independent variable. Experiment: a controlled test of a hypothesis in which the researcher manipulates one variable to discover its effect on another. Control condition: in an experiment a comparison condition in which participants are not exposed to the same treatment as in the experimental condition. Random assignment: a procedure for assigning people to experimental and control groups in which each individual has the same chance of getting into either group.
