We want winter annuals because it spaces the season out a little bit it takes advantage of spring moisture. We grow wheat and rye as winter annuals. There are about 5 to 10 seeds in a silicles. The meal is used for chickens and laying hens. In north america it is used primarily as biofuel. It has long chain fatty acids so it can be used in the food industry. Winter seeding - seeding into the snow and it will grow as soon as the snow melts. Can be grown as a winter annual. It is very unpredictable because the climate could be really warm and the seeds cold start geminating to early. Susceptible to herbicide residue that affect other brassica species.
