NURS 203 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Bronchodilator, Supine Position, Shortness Of Breath
Document Summary
*when teaching/instructing patients how to do deep breathing and coughing it is often helpful to demonstrate the technique with/and for them. Abdominal/diaphragmatic and pursed-lip breathing: help patient to a comfortable sitting or semi- Continue pursed-lip breathing as long as patient is experiencing sob. When irst learning to use, repeat q 2 hours; work up to 5 to 10 minutes four times/day. For patients who are post-operative and/or have pneumonia, repeat 3 5 times per hour. Allows patient to feel the rise and fall of their abdomen as the lungs expand. Slow, deep breath allows for greater lung expansion. Provides a cue to how abd/dia breathing feels; using chest/shoulder increases the work of breathing, without promoting lung expansion. Exhaling twice as long as inhaling allows for gradual expulsion of air; causes positive pressure in lungs which prevents airway collapse. Overall, this reduces trapped air in lungs and allows more fresh air to enter. Provides a cue to how abd/dia breathing feels.
