Duration: the length of sounds and silences in music. Beat: the regular, recurrent pulse that forms the background of the music. Time signature: two numbers, one above the other, occurring after the key signature at the beginning of a piece of music. It indicates to the musician what pattern of beats or metre to which the piece will adhere. The top number of a time signature indicates how many beats or pulses there will be per bar. The bottom number indicates the note value of one beat. 4/4 or common time: four beats in a measure and the beat has a value of a quarter note. Bar or measure: each group of beats; in 4/4 time, each group of 4 beats. Bar line: separates each group of beats (each bar or measure) in a piece of music. Double bar line: used to indicate the end of a section of a piece or the entire piece.
