Before cities, people were hunter and gatherers. Increased agricultural practices they started to use and manipulate the plants. They grew them outside of where they lived hence a city. Conventional food system - farmers produce more than they need so they barter excess food for other goods and services. People no longer have to grow their own food because they rely on others do the growing. Generalists - where farmers produce a little of everything ( locally produced ) Specialized food system - farmers developed specialized in grains, livestock or oilseeds. Cities rapidly expanding in physical size, occupy space previously used to produce food. Food system - a set of food related activities including agriculture, processing, distribution, consumption, and waste management each with its own regulatory institutions and activities plus social environmental and economic dimensions. Unsafe food is making its way into our system. Organic movement is part of the food system.
