HORT 15 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Winter Squash, Summer Squash, Cucurbita Pepo
Document Summary
2 categories: ribbed skin and smooth skin. The muskmelon immature fruit will have smooth skin and the mature on will develop a ribbed skin. They like heat, lots of moisture, average soil fertility, and full sun. Climacteric fruit - will ripen after picking but may not mature properly. Non stem end should be slightly soft, should smell musky, fruit may be starting to soften. The skin will turn a yellow colour. Treat the same as muskmelons but they are typically larger. The leaves look different than other melons. Long growing season and they like heat. Climacteric - will ripen, but may not develop the ultimate taste. Seedless / seeded cultivars - seedless are hybrids, must have seeded cultivar present for pollen or will not get the fruit. Most commonly direct seeded and you can transplant 4 weeks early. Zucchini is the most popular summer squash. Eaten when rind is hard, which means you can store them for a long time.
