No other country has so much surface area covered by water. Indigenous people located villages along riverbanks, lakes or coastal shorelines. Major cities have grown alongside water bodies. Before roads, waterways were the transportation system. One of the greatest threat to canada"s supply of fresh water is our belief in its absolute abundance. Uneven distribution of precipitation; ooding / drought. Relatively little water in agricultural areas; prairies. Water shortage in urban areas; population concentration. Most of the water comes from the ocean through evaporation but back into the ocean from precipitation. No matter where you live you are in a watershed. 9% of the worlds renewable water supply. Total annual stream ow averages about 150,000 per second. We tend to lack awareness of the true value and cost of water. Worsened by climate change, rapid population growth, food shortages, industrial, urban and agricultural expansion. Susceptible to the impacts of humans activites. Store and yield signi cant amounts of water.
