EVSC 220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Bulk Density, Soil Organic Matter, Canadian System Of Soil Classification
Document Summary
Soil mineral are a source of soil nutrients, weathering releases the nutrients into the soil solution. You will only nd structureless soil in sand. Granular structure: you can pick it up with your hands. Platy structure: usually with luvisols or brunisols. Granular: typically found in the a horizon, the water can easily penetrate the soil and plants can grow easy in it. Platy: more associated with trees, a structure that is wider then it is high. Isn"t as good for water to in ltrate, found more in the b horizon. Prism like structures: once water nds a way down it will continue to go down the same path. Bulk density: proportion of solid soil to a volume. Mass (dry) vs. volume in mg m^-3 or g cm^-3. Typical bulk densities for mineral soils range between 1. 0 and 1. 7 mg m^-3. Organic soils are less dense than minerals. Higher organic matter in mineral soils will make the bulk density drop.
