The water is less than 3 m deep. Approximately 30% of canada is covered by wetlands. Agricultural expansion has been the main cause of 85% of canadas wetland. Low spots are the potholes but have been lled in by vegetation. It is a function of the glaciers. Is is the norther great plains and mid grass and tall grass prairies that contain thousands of shallow wetlands known at potholes. In the centre theres standing open water and on the edge there emerging vegetation like cattails. The water is usually less then 2 m deep. Wetland function is best when it is dry, it allows the vegetation to roots and sprout.
