BIOL 121 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Crustacean, Symmetry In Biology, Triploblasty
Document Summary
Has taken basic appendage form and adapted it to feeding, defence/predation, walking, respiration, escape etc. Motile muscle acting antagonistically against other mucles (& coelomic fluid which is acting as a hydrostatic skeleton) at joints in appendages and segmentation along body. Abdomen segmented region commonly called the tail. Uropod set of flat appendages at end of abdomen, main parts of tail fan, used for escape/backward propulsion. Pleopods small, under abdomen used for moving water across the gills & carrying eggs in females. Gonopods modified pleopods found only in males, transfer sperm from male to female. Walking legs in thorax region, walking and feeding. Chelipeds claws in front of legs, defence, predation etc. Maxillipeds 3 sets of larger mouth parts. Maxillae 2 sets of smaller mouth parts. Mandibles 1 set, just before mouth, crushes food.
