Biotechnology for Improvement of feeds: Probiotics
Probiotics: (direct-fed microbials) live microorganisms which when administered in adequate
aounts confer a health benefit on the host
- Many definitions include reference to improving the “balance of microbiota”
Metchnikoff in early 1900`s was first to propose certain bugs may be good
- Longevity in Bulgarian Cossack population associated with their consumption of lactic
fermented products
problem is we don't know what good and bad bacteria is, we know what pathogens are but
don't always know which bacteria is beneficial
intestinal microbiota & pathogen resistance
- Germ free animals are rapidly colonized by pathogens when challenged
- because of the complex microbial community, that can shift to different concentration
of different bacteria
- if you don't have any bacteria in your gut it can quickly be taken up with pathogens
when challenged
othis is a very quick response because no other bacteria occupying the spots in
the gut
- effecting one bacteria doesn’t always cause a change due to complex interactions of all
the bacteria
Common probiotics Species
Bacteria:
- Lactobaciluss
oReuteri
oAcidophilus
- Bifidobacterium
oInfantis
oLactis
oLongum
- Streptococcus spp.
- Bacillus spp.
oSpores
- E.faecium
- Yeast
oSaccharomyces
lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium have no pathogens in them so if used no risk of harm
there is evidence of benefit coming form these bacteria use
won't survive in the pellet mill or in feed bunk very long have to sprinkle on top of feed by hand
which is not practical
