LECTURE 18!

Health care!
average vet expense was $196 in 2001 in the US!•
online medication purchase 2% in 2004, mostly parasitic meds!•
!
Worming!
roundworms ( ascaris) common in pups!•
their gut is a more favourable environment then adult gut!•
adults have more acidic guts!◦
routinely worm at 6&8 weeks ( twice before they leave, 2 weeks apart)!•
"eggs" are not killed, but mature and hatch in 2 weeks!•
why they do it two weeks apart!◦
!
Toxocarea canis!
on hand out!•
that the effected dogs pass its faces, milk or ...!•
can have an intermediate host!•
!
Tapeworms!
have to have a intermediate host!•
treat only when proglottids are seen!•
" mousers" need vigilance!•
need a much more harsh medication to treat tapeworms!•
scolex head had hooks on it that hook into the gastric lining!•
some general wormers might break part of the body off but not the head off the gastric lining!•
!

tapeworms need and intermediate host, such as a flea, mouse, fish, rabbits!•
on hand out!•
humans and dogs can have the same intermediate (fish)!•
humans are typically getting the tapeworm by eating th fish not petting the dog, even if it had •
been lying in faces and has eggs on it!
!
Multipurpose wormers?!
some roundworms medications only "anesthetize" and worms are passed (strongid)!•
tapeworm medication should be stronger to kill the worm for it to dislodge (droncit)!•
!
!
echinocactus multilocularis ( paratie)!
both dogs and cats in saskatoon!•
ingestion of infective eggs from faces!•
causes alveolar hydatids in pets & people!•
hydatids= like cluster of grap cyst !◦
