Document Summary

Ovary = vascular connective tissue containing ovarian follicles. Ovarian follicles = oocyte surrounded by follicular cells. Usually in different stages of development within the ovary. Haploid oocytes arise from meiosis of cells in the germinal epithelium or from sex cords that grow into the ovary. Follicle is surrounded by vascular ct theca folliculi. Maturing follicle: a homogenous zona pellucida develops b/w the oocyte and follicular cells, microvilli from both the oocyte and follicular cells extend into the zona pellucida, help transport yolk proteins to the interior of the developing follicle. Large number of eggs are produced at one time and ovary fills the body cavity. Oocytes are surrounded by cuboidal or squamous follicular cells. Follicular cells transport yolk proteins (produced in the liver) from the blood into the oocyte. As the egg matures they make the zona pellucida. The mature large, yolky eggs rupture the follicle cells and the peritoneum (when released)
