Document Summary

*thalamus is defined by its inputs: describe the boundaries/ structure of the thalamus. Massive group of bilateral diencephalic nuclei: has 3 major groups of nuclei. Where is it: anterior: as far as the interventricular foramen of monro, posterior: as far as the posterior commissure, superior: forms part of the floor of the lateral ventricle. Functional: type of connectivity: relay nuclei (most of the thalamus) in the anterior, medial and lateral, subcortical nuclei (interneurons) around the thalamus, intralaminar nuclei (cid:894)(cid:862)ara (cid:863)(cid:895) borders around the anterior, medial and lateral groups. Anatomical subdivision: anterior, medial, lateral, subcortical, and intralaminar nuclei: anterior, medial, lateral (dorsal and ventral tier, subcortical. Similar to the anatomical groups, however, all the relay nuclei are grouped together (anterior, medial and lateral nuclei) Subcortical and intralaminar nuclei are separate groups w/ non-relay functions. Intralaminar = lie within the internal medullary lamina (names not important); from reticular formation: subcortical = reticular nucleus, lies b/w external medullary lamina and internal capsule.
