Social inequality helps us understand how entire category"s of people are ranked in a society. It"s the group (cid:272)hara(cid:272)teristi(cid:272)s that is the fo(cid:272)us. Use ethnicity to stratify people: different societies have different ordering. In canadian societies - vertical mosaic - not all groups are equal: evidence shows the aboriginal people are at the bottom - in relation to those in power. Ethnic standpoint: europeans - leaders, etc More to inequality than just economic - need material before economy. It is the economy structure that determines the hierarchy, sex, ethnicity. Slavery - use racism to justify this: the material is war, crime, and debt - creates enslavement. Theme - one person owning another person. Caste system - outlawed in india - but still see some hints: religiously sanction hierarchy - complex - that an individual is bound to for life. Each caste is an occupational role - has all labour requirements for that society.
