Document Summary

Quan - assign numbers to attributes we are researching. Qual - capture depth/richness to gain insight on lived experiences: open ended questions in interview. Both are used - based on your hypothesis. Most common research is survey: can gather large amounts of data from a large amount of people. Interviews does the same thing as survey - different data, less people. Research question and/or hypothesis determines what approach you"re gonna take. Less likely method used to sociology is experiments: experiments are artificial and occur in artificial settings, human behaviour is too complex to reduce it to 2 variables. Variable - something likely to vary/change: experiments are highly controlled, designed to exclude other variables besides the independent and dependent variables. Dependent - effect: limited way to view human behaviour. Experimental design more common is psychology: how does education affect annual income, how does ethnicity affect educational achievement, cause and effect is used to some research just not sociology.
