Document Summary

Much of our thoughts, feelings, moives, defences, fears, and wishes are unconscious. Part of being human is recognizing that we have conlicing thoughts, feelings, and moivaions. Behaviour is oten an imperfect compromise among these forces. Our unconscious is more raional than freud thought; feelings inluence our cogniions more than modern cogniive psychology originally thought. Personality begins to form in childhood and shows coninuity into adulthood. Childhood experiences are important in making us who we are as adults, especially when it comes to our relaionships with others. Mental representaions of self, others, and relaionships are important. These representaions guide the way we form later relaionships and the kind of psychological problems we may experience. Personality development and growth involves moving from an immature, dependent state to a mature interdependent state. Development involves more than managing our sexual and aggressive urges; it includes managing feelings of dependency, independency, and interdependency in socially appropriate ways.
