All members of the family exert mutual influence over each other. Changes in one member incurs changes for others. Two dimensions of parenting: warmth and responsiveness, control and demandingness. Culture: some cultures impose more rules than others. Ses (socioeconomic status: low ses parents impose more rules (no change in love, affection, and care) they do this to protect their children more (not as safe neighborhoods etc. ) Education: high education parents tend to be more authoritative. 1: children will use their parents as role models. Feedback: reinforcement, negative reinforcement trap, intermittent reinforcement, punishment, time-out. Age of first marriage 29 for women; 31 for men. Age at birth of first child 29. 6 years. Most children have contact with some of their grandparents and even great grandparents. Maternal grandparents more involved with their grandchildren. Relationship with children often determines relationship with grandchildren. Parents have higher expectations with first born children and more realistic expectations are more relaxed with later born children.
