Document Summary

Latent learning: learning that is not immediately expressed by a response until organism is reinforced for doing so. Humans experience latent learning as well: consider the layout of university. Tolman and honzik hypothesized that rats possess a cognitive map of their environment. Humans and rats acquire info in the absence of reinforcement and that we can us it when circumstances allow. Influences observable behaviours and internal mental lives: s-o-r theory. S-r psychologists (ie. thorndike) assumed thinking was a form of behaviour. Involves changes in behaviour and knowledge that result from watching others: explains cultural differences, clothing styles, dietary preferences, etc. Primary way that adaptive behaviour spreads so rapidly within populations: ex. children will avoid food if they witness their parents reacting with disgust towards it. Albert bandura identified four processes involved in observational learning: attention to the act or behaviour, memory for it, ability to reproduce it, motivation to do so.
