The process of converting basic sensory information into neural activity that the brain can interpret: molecules that meet receptors in the nasal cavity produce smell. The idea that separates brain areas are specialized for different sensory inputs. We are designed to devote particular attention to the emergence of novel and survival- relevant sensations: humans sensitive to novel information, there is an orienting response. Occur when surprising and new events capture our attention. It is beneficial to understand and respond quickly to surprising events, and human curiosity has helped us adapt to a range of environments: eg. Go on a trip, you take everything in, you are curious: wired to learn more about what is going on in the world. We are set up to devote les attention to very familiar stimuli. We experience adaptation as boredom when engaging in repetitive, routine activities: driving a car: bet bored.
