Document Summary
The species is important, it usually represents the basic unit of classification: smallest grouping used in classification. The concept of bacterial species is not well defined. In higher organisms a species can be distinguished by morphological features and the ability of members of species to interbreed to give rise to a viable progeny: carry out sexual reproduction. Taxonomy vs phylogeny: taxonomy names and what they do, phylogeny is the evolution and how species are related to one another. Bacterial species is defined as a group of different strains that show a high degree of similarity and that differ appreciably from other groups of strains (species) According to this definition, a species is not homogeneous and is comprised of bacterial strains that may differ from each other, but overall share a large number of characters both phenotypic and genotypic. Although this is the best working definition for a species, there are some problems.
