Document Summary

What do we mean by (cid:498)mass movement(cid:499): mass movement is the movement of soil or rock under gravity, this is also referred to as a landslide. There are 7 types of landslides: mass movements can happen at any speed and can cause any damage. Falls: free-fall, dominantly vertical downward movement, moves as separate blocks, blocks fall down a cliff face then break up on contact and flow outward, vertical falls, vertical drops of rocks may roll and bounce down the slope. If it falls from high enough it may turn into a debris avalanche. Flows: flow over landscape, move as very viscous fluids, turbulence within moving mass, shallow slope failure of loose material that is like fluid, ex. Soil creeps, earthflows, mudflows, and debris: can be wet or dry, can be sorted based on grain size, soil creep slow downward movement of rock and soil down a low-grade slope.
