FMLY 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Viscous Liquid, Cryoprotectant, Artificial Insemination
Document Summary
Ahr = any activity undertaken for the purpose of facilitating human reproduction. Bill c-6 protects health and safety of canadians undergoing ahr. Use of fertility drugs (hormones that stimulate gamete production) In vitro (in glass) fertilization (cid:894)(cid:862)test-tu(cid:271)e (cid:271)a(cid:271)(cid:455) (cid:373)ethod(cid:863)(cid:895) I(cid:374)(cid:448)ol(cid:448)es u(cid:374)iti(cid:374)g a(cid:374) o(cid:448)u(cid:373) & a sper(cid:373) i(cid:374) a la(cid:271)orator(cid:455) dish & i(cid:373)pla(cid:374)ti(cid:374)g the e(cid:373)(cid:271)r(cid:455)o i(cid:374) a (cid:449)o(cid:373)e(cid:374)(cid:859)s uterus. Ivf embryos are frozen (cryopreserved) before being implanted. Cryopreservation = preserving cells or tissues through a freezing process that stops all biological activity (slow-cooling) Used to be most widely used method for freezing/storing embryos. Results in high rates of cellular damage/destruction due to ice crystal formation & dehydration. New process of immersing embryo in cryoprotectants (antifreeze-like liquid), & plunging into super-cooled liquid nitrogen (instantly freezes embryo) Virtification process = use of cryoprotectants along with rapid cooling to prevent the fluid in the biological tissues (eggs, semen, embryos) from forming crystals (that act like glass shards on cell structures) and from dehydrating.
