BIOL 2500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Ribosomal Rna, Phosphodiester Bond, Coding Strand

29 views6 pages

Document Summary

Several types of rna are produced in a cell; messenger rna (mrna) is the only type that is translated. Ribosomal rna (rrna) forms pat of the ribosomes. Transfer rna (trna) carries amino acids to ribosomes, to be assembled into proteins. Transcription uses one strand of the dna to direct synthesis of a single stranded rna transcript. The dna strand from which the rna is synthesized is known as the template strand. The complementary partner of the template strand is called the coding strand. Rna consist of ribose, a phosphate group, and one of four nucleotide bases. three of these are a, c and g, same as dna. Uracil replaced thymine in rna; u pairs with a in rna:rna complementary base pairing. Rna polymerase is the enzyme that synthesizes rna transcripts. Promoters help regulate the initiation of transcription, which begins near the promoter site and the start of transcription.
