Document Summary

Neuron physiology vi - processing of synaptic information. Stronger stimuli cause the release of more neurotransmitter. Every 1 action potential will cause a constant amount of neurotransmitter to be released. Increasing the frequency of the action potentials can be used to communicate the strength of the primary (original) stimulus. A single graded potential that is supra threshold will produce a series of action potentials along the length of the axon. If a suprathneehold graded potential is very strong than the number of action potentials produced will be even greater. The axon of a single neuron can branch. A single branched neuron is able to form synapses with many different post-synaptic neurons. Can receive inhibitory or excitatory, don"t have be the same (form the one cell body) More ef cient, don"t need as many neurons to stimulate the post synaptic cell. Branched dendrites allow a single neuron to receive incoming stimuli from many different pre- synaptic neurons.
