BIOL 1412 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Primary Motor Cortex, Osteoblast, Catecholamine
Document Summary
Wernicke"s area: can"t understand spoken or written words, can speak but the words are meaningless, inappropriate ( ie calling a book a horse) or mixed up. Broca"s area: understands speech but can"t produce sensible speech ( can"t find the words) or read, coordination of respiratory and oral movements are poor. Glands and tissues that secrete hormones which travel in the blood to target cells: cells with specific receptors. Hormones bind to receptor and change cell activity. Intracellular ( nuclear receptor: water-soluble hormones fig 3. 16,16. 2. Peptides, proteins or the catecholamines ( first messengers) Bind to cell membrane receptors: do not enter the cell for their action. Hormone receptor complex activates membrane proteins: g protein. Activates 2nd messenger system: cyclic amp (camp, calcium ca2+ Example of a 2nd messenger system- camp: hormone binds to cell surface receptor and activates g-protein, g-protein activates adenylate cyclase ( enzyme, atp----(adenylate cyclase) - camp +ppi ( inorganic pyrophosphate) therefore.
