There are also domain bacteria, and archaea but were focusing on eukarya. Places related genera in the same family, families into orders, orders into classes, classes into phyla, phyla into kingdoms, and kingdoms into domains. Taxon: the named taxonomic unit at any level of the hierarchy. Phylogenetic tree: branched diagram to show the evolutionary history of a group of organisms. Linnaean system distinguished between groups but tells us nothing about these groups evolutionary relationships to one another. Phylocode: system that only names groups that include a common ancestor and all of its descendants. The general pattern of branching is called tree topology often depicted as a series of dichotomies or two-way branch points. Closely related, groups of organisms that share an immediate common ancestor.
