Linnaean system distinguished between groups but tells us nothing about these groups evolutionary relationships to one another. Phylocode: system that only names groups that include a common ancestor and all of its descendants. The general pattern of branching is called tree topology often depicted as a series of dichotomies or two-way branch points. Closely related, groups of organisms that share an immediate common ancestor.
