Document Summary
Lecture 35: ecology is a broad interdisciplinary field that demonstrates how various organisms are intertwined in a habitat. Interactions between organisms can occur for various reasons and symbioses): ecologists have identified levels of organization, the lowest level of organization involves the individual organism (a singular bacterium, plant, fish, etc. ). Energy is transferred from one organism to another by feeding: some trophic levels that exist within various ecosystems include, producers which are the photosynthetic organisms (autotrophs self- feeding ). They are pivotal to the function of the ecosystem as this is where the flow of energy enters the ecosystem occurs. No energy enters the ecosystem except via the producers: producers are generally organisms that can take carbon dioxide and water, and form carbohydrates using an external energy source. Oxygen is also given off as a by-product: with the carbohydrates created, they can use it to form proteins, lipids (carbon skeletons and glycerol molecules can be formed) and nucleic acids.
