ZOO 3050 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Zona Pellucida, Waste Management, Acrosome Reaction
Document Summary
Zp3 and zp2 molecules (stands for zona pellucida). Zona pellucida is a comparable structure to the jelly coat. Equivalent of resact, not same structure or anything but comparable. Mammalian sperm has the receptors (zp3) and then behind it (within the acrosomal vesicle) we have the zp2 receptors. Also a zp1 protein that is involved in the process but f"n not completely known. First thing you will find is the binding between the zp3 protein and zp3 receptor. Activated through vesicle transport (not there all the time) part of sperm activation process that is happening. You will then get ca influx this is usually involved in motility but this ca facilitates the acrosomal reaction. Acrosomal reaction is basically the bursting of the acrosomal vesicle. Similar to what we have with regular waste removal. Vesicles move to surface, bind with lipid bilayer and release content into the outside environment. Consequence of increased ca concentration in the cell.
