Method for assigning treatments to experimental units. 150 subjects randomly split into six groups of 25 each. Treatments assigned to the six groups of subjects. Principles of experimental design: control effects of lurking variables by comparing several treatments, randomization to assign experimental units to treatments, replication on many units. 0bseved effect so large that it is not likely to occur by chance is called statistically significant. Could have pairs of subjects matched based on some criteria. Alternatively could have same subject use each treatment. Block is a group of experimental units known before experiment to be similar in some way that may affect response to treatments. In a block design, random assignment of units to treatments done separately in each block. Matched pairs design is an example of a block design. 180 subjects: 90 men and 90 women. Two separate randomizations; one for men and one for women. Want to gather information on a large group of individuals (population)
