Government employees had the highest level of stress then policing and then fire fighters (1989) Types of stress: acute: stress with sudden onset and sudden decline, chronic: this is the stress that builds over time. Does stress vary by rank, location, gender, task. Organizational stem from the organizational business of policing itself (stems from the way they operate as institution co workers, discipline, hiring) Inherent stressors: stem from the act of police work. Majourity of the popular stressors are inherent. 1-5 vs. 6-10 (idealism is wearing off) Highest stress levels are in narcotics officers and sex crime workers is proportionate to the size and importance of the task they are prone to suicide (likely to do with their undercover work, they have seen too much) Community policing officers: they are prone to high stress levels because they lack necessary skills and they report constant hassles from their colleuges we are taking assignment as a control variable.
