This kind of investigative reporting is happening less often: cost is going up. Media often repeat press releases that are written by police departments. Ensuring the construction of reality police want us to see is channeled through the media: media as an efficient way to legitimize police ideology. Likely a little bit of a watchdog and a partner. Likely leaning more towards partnership: as the police control info more effectively, and as our demand for dramatic, cheap and readily available crime news increases. The impact of social media on police communications. Slower emergence some departments claim this is due to a lack of resources and expertise. Police claim that social media allows for community engagement: often marketed as community policing, it is used for sharing and soliciting incident-related info regularly, it is used for responding to questions from the public sometimes.
