SOC 3710 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Spring Break, Syphilis
Document Summary
Rockdale country- upper class rings of suburbs surrounding big city of atlanta. 3 high schools in the area, rockdale is one of them. 1996, the town was chosen to host the equestrian events, and during this time there was an outbreak of syphilis in the town mostly amongst teenagers. A lot of young girls (white upper class), some as young as 13. Lots of deviant sexual activity with multiple partners. Surprised that the young girls were not abused, homeless, or impoverished- dont expect this type of behaviour. Big groups would hang out in the parking lots- girls wearing baggy clothes, lots of eyeliner, defying midnight curfew for those under 16, and would steal. One girl engaged in intercourse with a whole line of men at a party. Stabbing in town after a night of drinking. Intent to kill, but did not, so none was charged. Most of the girl were white, but the guys were racially mixed.
