SOC 2700 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Marxist Feminism, Victimology, Domestic Violence
Document Summary
It was blamed on madness, in 19th century the disease of the mind became popular to explain women committing crime (more killers) Sometimes it was blamed by demons, they just replaced demons with mental health now. Not a lot of attention on female offenders, its more recent research and the explanation tends to be mental illness. Sutherland says it is because of the differential sex-role and their socialization: girls are raised to be domestic wives and mothers, they are raised below males. Also the class of a women effects them becoming criminals; middle class females have different things expected of them than working class females. The 60"s wanted to push more in understanding female offenders, there was more equality so studies were less sexist and biased. Liberal feminists say it is because of inequality, male domination that women commit crime.
