Labelling & master status lecture: becker (1963): master status. Deviant label dominates how we treat people. Master status trumps everything about you; becomes the most important thing in your life. Culturally sensitive; sensitive to time and space. Excluded key opportunities begin to shut down. How having a criminal record affects job prospects (labelling and employment study) Even if you hold everything constant, the most powerful is parental labelling (young criminals or not?) Role of people who are significantly close to you can have a profound effect on how you see yourself. Shows how initial stigma of being charged/ given a fine sets into motion a spiral where they can"t escape this label. Labelling theory: managing deviant identities: deviants, agency & managing identities. Controlling what other people know about you control impact of stigma. Don"t mention things they are not proud of. Divide up social worlds (some people know; others don"t: schools, teachers and underachievers .
