Subcultures: system of values, attitudes, modes of behaviour, and life styles of a social group that is somewhat distinct from, yet nevertheless connected to, dominant culture . Subcultures as normal or pathological response to social conditions. City as organic whole, social ecology, pay attention to where people come together and how they relate to one another, Clusters of natural economies with specific norms/values. The city socializes but also generates wilder urges , options to be deviant. Degrees of conformity to city and ongoing resistance. One side you want to belong and conform, on other take advantages of what city has to offer, and follow wild urges. Ethnicity and territory, documents through waves of immigration, these little national economies, these subcultures of deviance arise and territorialize their area. Taxi dance hall subculture: jazz was big at the time and jazz clubs were rising in. Young females were becoming disillusioned with life in city, became boring.
