SOC 2070 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Gentrification, Consumerism
Document Summary
When you violate the norms and values you will be seen as deviant. For many, navigating spaces isn"t a problem: easily conform, spaces are inclusionary (feel like we belong in the class) You rarely see forms of homosexuality in social spaces. Laura secords has a picture of a woman and a man for valentine"s day, never 2 men: spaces re ect and reinforce this norm, shopping malls, restaurants, bars etc. cater to male/female heterosexual desires. Stigma mangament: they will dress and act di erently, minimize interactions and avoid pda in spaces that are dominantly straight, dress in an e ort to pass, avoid exclusionary spaces and frequently go to inclusionary spaces, homeless. Referring to the visible homeless (the stereotype that you see on the streets) The visible homeless are pretty much deviant everywhere. There was a rise in number of homeless ticketed under the ontario safe streets act in 2013.
