Spiritual theories (objective) things are evil and that is what makes them deviant. Deviance can be defined and measured and can be developed through scientific theories. Test moral/ normative boundaries (allows for change) If it is functional it means it exists for a reason. Moral boundaries what is it about that person that makes them deviant. Mechanical social order that all the members have similar norms and values similar traditions mutual. Organic social order is a product of our differences we dependent on each other when that interdepended breaks down (natural disaster, when the social system is no longer integrating we act on selfish interest. Every once and awhile people will engage in selfish misconduct understanding of what is accepted and what is not accepted. Merton (1938) social structure and anomie: functionalist logic, anomie and social systems, cultural structure verse opportunity, memorize modes of adaptation. Conformity is one of the options but not a deviant option.
