Sociology 2070: social deviance treated by the police: he is deviant in many ways: He is not following the rules of the professional football. He is biracial, so he is part black, part white but in the interviews, he has said that he likes to be recognized as a black person. Who/what is socially deviant: murderers, rapists, thieves, terrorists, child molesters, drug dealers, fraudsters. When it gets hard to classify deviance. Nobody knows, it is just known and understood as deviant. Objectivist approach: certain characteristics make an act or person socially deviant. These characteristics are qualities that make something or someone deviant. Deviance stems from the act or person. Physical (e. g. assault) or psychological (e. g. bullies) Harmful, but not deviant (eating fast food, driving a car). Deviant, but not harmful (being rude, taking 10 items through the express lane etc. : objectivist approach: rarity.
