Crime & criminal justice week 10 courts. Courts & trials provide info to crown attorney, ca decides what to do with this info. Media influence: if there is a trial, court is v mundane, not as exciting as what happens on tv (no last-minute revelations or evidence) Criminal cases: only 10% go to trial, rest have charges dropped or are pleaded out, based on how much evidence is there, usually a negotiation for some benefit = a plea (people benefit from pleading guilty) Summary offences (minor) handled in prov. court, routine/mundane cases. 3-5 minutes per case; all decisions made by a judge alone (no juries) less severe punishments, fines up to & prison terms of up to 6mo (provincial prison) W/ police, stats surveys start jan 1st courts go from april 1st to march 31st of following yr. Problem of universal crime reporting: don"t know how much actual crime exists.
