Document Summary

Three factions: radical feminism: radical feminists view men as brutish, aggressive and violent people who take advantage of women. They want to put women in charge: liberal feminism: liberal feminists are looking for equality between men/women. They want to change the structure of society to change the sexes" inequality. Women are less criminal than men; we need theories to explain this. Authorities are more likely to give women a warning instead of arresting or charging them. The system is nicer to women so they"re less represented in it. Problem: when females contradict their gender roles, the system is more harsh on them than they would be if males are engaged in same behaviour (ex: a girl fighting is seen as psycho and treated harshly) In the 1970s, female crime levels increased. This coincides with the second wave of feminism. More female labour participation means more females are leaving the house and have more opportunity to commit crime.
