SOC 1500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: General Social Survey, Participant Observation, Deeper Understanding
Document Summary
Measuring crime in society: talking to people on street, surveys. Ucr2 also includes data on victims and accused (eg. gender, relationship) Crime rate = # of reported crimes/ total population x 100,000. What counts as a crime changes over time. Not all crimes are reported to the police. Unreported crime; part of iceberg that we cannot see (underwater) Questionnaires that ask participants about offences they have committed. Intended to capture information about crimes that may not have come to the attention of the police (dark gure) Useful for criminologists to determine why more crime may occur. General social survey- largest & most well known in canada. It is dif cult to sample the most vulnerable groups. Rely on participants memories and, often, interpretation of whether a crime occured. Researcher observes individuals in natural settings to gather information about crime. Includes only a small number of participants so the research can gather a deeper understanding of crime and victimization.
