Explaining crime: general theories and the life course perspective. Gottfredson and hirschi (1990): criminals are more likely to have risk breaking behaviour. In their theory, they proposed, their childhood influences their self control. Argued that abusive parenting leads to more insensitive / low self controlled kids. Crime and deviance are the result of low self-control. Quality of parenting during childhood influences people"s degree of self-control. Problem behaviours are age-related: criminogenic influences have the greatest impact early in life, criminal behaviour follows predictable patterns over the life course. Life course research relies on longitudinal research designs. Age crime curve: crime rate increases at teenage years then decreases after mid. Cross sectional: observe a collection of people at one point in time. Cause and effect cannot be talked about cross sectional. if a survey was given about if you have low self control, they wont know what is causing it. Longitudinal: observe the same people over time.
