18 views1 pages

Document Summary

Deviance is not a particular act, its what society deems as deviant and how they respond to it. Example- masturbating it normal but masturbating in public is deviant based on how society reacts to it. A lot of it has to do with social control. We decide what is acceptable and what is not. Containment theory: some people are better at controlling their emotions and impulses, avoid conflict, meanwhile there are oppose people. Labelling theory: self-identity and behavior of individuals may be determined or influenced by the terms used to describe or classify them. Jail is a short term solution and likely will be released and do it again, while treatment can help prevent it from happening again and curing/aiding them. If we actually provide treatment then maybe people are more likely to make different choices.
