SOAN 2120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Ethnomethodology, Missing Data

12 views3 pages

Document Summary

Most prominent in anthropology, but also used in sociology. Based on naturalism: observe people in small social settings over a small or large period of time. No statistics, mathematics - face to face social interactions with people in their home environment. Used when other methods are not practical. Much less structured - social environment and interactions guide the study. Focus groups: focus on an even smaller number of similar individuals, questioned on attitude, values and beliefs for about 90 minutes (often used in the private sector about products) Describing a culture and understanding another way of life from your own perspective (interpretive school) Displays of behaviour do not give meaning - instead someone tried to gure out what is meant by the behaviour. Want to tap into the reality of the members of the group (what is meant or implied) Ethnomethodology: theory, philosophy and method; ndings are the result of the method used as from the social life or environment.
