Work is a social activity * important (work is inherently and primarily a social activity, even if society makes work out to be about individual achievements etc. ) Ideas about work change through time- as well as in different cultures. Patterns of work may be highly changeable or fixed ( types of work might be very structured and other types of work may be more flexible depending on the occupation) Gender, race, ethnic and other social inequalities predate capitalism. Britain under roman rule: pig-iron; subsistence farming; soldiers; craft workers. Feudal britain: military elite (lords) extract surplus from peasant farmers in exchange for right to use land and protection. Early capitalism: state rule; money, wages and rent; labour intensive; guilds. Economic and political system that holds that a country"s wealth depends on metal resources (eg silver and gold) and state control of economy and resources.
