Power is diffuse, (it is everywhere) although not equally distributed, it is internalized in us and exercised through surveillance. Society is maintained not by consensus or overt coercion but by covert systems of bodily surveillance and discipline . It isn"t forced it"s the idea we behave as though we are being watched and have been disciplined by many institutions. Power is a relation between subjects, exercised within the social body rather than above it. People who exert more control and power than others. Not every one just goes along with the norms. Those who have more power can figure out how to better discipline bodies. Resistance however often serves to increase/improve disciplinary power. Disciplinary power subjugates specific individuals (prisoners, workers, etc. ) is distinct from.
