PSYC 4320 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Glass Ceiling, Gender Role, Life Satisfaction
Document Summary
Discussion 1 - january 14: springer et al. (2012) base their argument on two basic ideas: 1) sex is not a biological mechanism and 2) sex and gender are often entangled. Sex is not a biological mechanism: can"t just use sex as the reason behind differences between male/female, you need to consider the social aspect- the gender- as being part of it as well. Previously a causal link between sex and gender was thought to flow from a biological to social difference. Recent evidence shows that influence operates in the opposite direction of this perceived causal link. Entanglement: states that it"s difficult to separate notions of sex and gender. You can"t measure the effects of sex without also getting the individual"s social treatment in there too. Have a need to include social aspects of gender with sex. Sex/gender is approached as a complex phenomena that are simultaneously biological and social.
