Iceberg metaphor: we see only the surface (miscue) vs. underlying. Underlying: desires, fears, beliefs, expectations (some are outside of awareness) For mainstream psychology, attachment theory still has a lot of the same assumptions classic psychoanalysis had. According to freud, unacceptable thoughts or beliefs are withheld (or repressed) from conscious awareness, and these slips help reveal what is hidden in the unconscious. Therapy was de ned by freud as making the unconscious conscious. Must make these unconscious tendencies or feelings conscious to become an autonomous being. President bush reportedly said in a speech he was giving to a group of teachers i"d like to spank all teachers. we guess that he wanted to say thank all the teachers. Attachment isn"t a story about the child, it is a story about the child"s relationship with their parent. If it was about the child it would be about temperament.
