October 30th lecture on the self (chapter 6) Age 2 you have a desire theory of mind as you don"t yet understand that people"s beliefs can be different. 2: self-recognition/ sense of self" desire theory of mind emerges. In the west, we talk about the sense as now (be true to yourself) and we look a lot inside and some sense of immanence inside. The whole idea of the self and so forth, makes no sense, unless you understand the broader historical context of moving from individual to collectivist cultures. Individualism requires an autonomous agent that chooses but how to choose (e. g. , a life partner) Assumption: self is a guiding resource that we should read in terms of its authentic needs & desires. Link: the emotional development chapter spoke at some length about acquiring cultural display rules being someone that fits your culture, makes others happy, is acceptable but potentially false.
